IAN COWARD

2nd Degree Black Belt | Senior Assistant Instructor

Ian is a 2nd Degree Black Belt and one of the longest-standing members of the Shaolin Kickboxing community. His association with the club dates back to its inception, and his training with the Chief Instructor predates even that, making him a foundational figure in the development and growth of the organisation.

He earned his first black belt in November 2002 and has since continued to refine his skills and deepen his understanding of both traditional and modern martial arts. As the eldest of four brothers, three of whom are also Shaolin black belts, Ian embodies the values of discipline, leadership, and family legacy. His commitment to martial arts and mentorship makes him an outstanding role model for younger students.

Ian has a particular passion for the traditional Shaolin syllabus, embracing its philosophical depth and technical precision. At the same time, he is highly proficient in contemporary styles, including kickboxing and K1 techniques, which he teaches with clarity and enthusiasm. His classes strike a balance between tradition and innovation, offering students a well-rounded martial arts education.

Renowned for his explosive athleticism, Ian is especially known for his exceptional standing and jumping kicks, as well as his formidable overhand punch, widely regarded as one of the most powerful in the club. Holding pads for him is not for the faint-hearted!

Ian currently serves as Assistant Instructor to the Chief Instructor at the Kings Langley branch, where he plays a key role in class delivery, student development, and maintaining the high standards of the Shaolin Kickboxing curriculum.

His dedication, technical expertise, and approachable teaching style continue to inspire students of all ages and skill levels.
